"Let Them Eat Cake!"

Friday, June 29th

You may not know this about me, but I love biographies. Now, add royalty, a misunderstood fair maiden, and a tragic ending to the story and I get all giddy and misty-eyed. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to visit Versailles. We caught the 8:00 AM commuter train with the intention of grabbing some breakfast along the way. Although we were hungry, tired, and our feet were still barking from the days before, according, to my "friend" Rick Steve's there were several food options for us to choose from at the palace. Unfortunately, this did not go as I had expected. We found ourselves inside Versailles, and after waiting in 3 long lines, one to get in, another to store an umbrella, and a third to get our complimentary audio guides, we discovered that the food was only at the end of the 2 hour tour.

Palace of Versailles

There was no way we could enjoy the tour without food, so of course we decided to make our way through the sea of people, saying, "excusez moi" as we went.

Hall of Mirrors

This place is huge. I am guessing we traversed through 50-75 rooms, some small, some gigantic, some playing a short video, and all packed with tourists. A couple of flights of stairs and many long hallways later, we finally found the sustenance we were looking for. The kids and I quickly devoured our ham, butter and cheese sandwiches, while Tim gobbled down oatmeal and a latte'. Then we were off again, fortunately we found an exit out from the sandwich shop and made our way back to the entrance of the tour. Whew!

Hi!

Marie Antoinette

Although the palace was amazing, our favorite part of the tour was the gardens. We were drawn in by the beautiful fountains, statues, groves of trees and sweet smelling flowers.

There are 50 fountains in the gardens.

Lovely

Finally back in Paris, we found a cozy little bistro bar serving up local favorite dishes. We ended our day with dessert. You may say we had our cake and we ate it too!
